How Long Do Cigars Last in Storage?

Stored properly at 65 to 70 percent humidity, cigars can last for years, and many actually improve with age. Tobacco is a natural product that keeps almost indefinitely as long as its moisture stays stable. Poorly stored cigars, by contrast, can dry out and be ruined within days. Longevity is about storage conditions, not an expiry date.

Do cigars expire?

Cigars do not have a hard expiry date like food. A well-kept cigar does not "go off" with time; instead it slowly matures. What ruins cigars is not age but poor conditions, drying out, excess moisture, mold, or tobacco beetles. Keep the environment right and a cigar stays good for a very long time.

What affects how long cigars last

Humidity stability: the single biggest factor. Steady 65 to 70 percent preserves cigars; swings damage them.
Temperature: cool and stable is best; heat risks beetles and dries cigars.
Air and light: a sealed, dark space protects the leaf.
Handling: frequent handling and opening causes humidity swings.

Aging: when cigars get better

Many premium cigars improve with age. Over months and years in stable storage, the tobaccos in the blend marry together, harsh edges soften, and the flavor becomes rounder and more harmonious. Some collectors deliberately age cigars for years for this reason. Not every cigar benefits equally, but well-made cigars generally reward patience.

Signs a cigar has been stored badly

Dry and brittle: the wrapper cracks; it was kept too dry.
Spongy and tight: over-humidified.
Mold: fuzzy, colored growth means it is spoiled (not to be confused with harmless plume).
Tiny holes: tobacco beetle damage; the cigar and possibly its neighbors are compromised.

Can you revive an old dry cigar?

Sometimes. A cigar that dried out can often be slowly rehydrated over weeks in a humidor, though it may lose some of its original oils and character. Rushing rehydration cracks the wrapper. A cigar with mold or beetle damage, however, should be discarded.
