A fat figurado that marries focus and volume
The Oliva Serie V Special V Figurado is a 6 by 60 tapered figurado - the most unusual shape in Oliva's flagship line, made in Esteli. An Ecuadorian Sun Grown Habano wrapper covers Nicaraguan binder and filler, and the geometry is the point: a figurado's tapered head sits on a gordo's fat body, so the smoke opens focused through the taper and then broadens into the plush, cool volume a 60 ring gives, marrying two characters most sizes keep separate.
What that odd shape does is combine aimed intensity with mouth-filling smoke. The opening lands pointed - coffee, dark chocolate and pepper through the taper - then fills within a few draws into thick espresso and cocoa, leather and a dried-fruit sweetness, the pepper a low warmth. Crucially, the early focus lingers, so even at full 60-ring volume the flavours stay a shade more defined than the straight Double Toro's. Cool, plush, yet defined - that's the Special V's reason to exist. Pressing a 60-ring figure well is hard, and this one showed the roller's skill: an even burn across the taper, a firm pale ash, a generous draw over ninety patient minutes.
My reservations are size, time and availability. This is a big, long, genuinely full cigar, so it wants a settled evening and a full stomach, not a quick smoke; the ninety-minute run is a commitment. The pressed figurado is also a rarer production than the core sizes, so it can be harder to track down. If you want the same plush volume in a simpler shape, the Double Toro is the everyday option; the Special V is for the smoker who wants the geometry too. Against a My Father Le Bijou figurado, the Oliva is more coffee-and-cocoa and cooler-burning at this girth.
Where it fits is the long, appreciative evening cigar for someone who enjoys an unusual shape done well. Pair it with black coffee or an aged rum and give it the time it asks for - the Special V Figurado is the Serie V's most distinctive and, in its way, most impressive size.
