Oliva Serie V Robusto Review

The Robusto is the classic, everyday size of the Serie V - a 5 by 50 that I treat as my reference point for the whole blend. Mine had a handsome Ecuadorian Sun Grown Habano wrapper, medium reddish-brown, lightly oily, well rolled with an even pack. The 50 ring is the traditional middle ground, neither slim nor fat, and the cold draw reflected it: balanced, giving cocoa and cedar without leaning one way. This is the size I'd hand someone who wanted to know what the Serie V actually is.

The opening is the Serie V in miniature, nicely centred. Coffee and dark chocolate lead, cedar just behind, and a measured black pepper threads through without dominating. The 50 ring means neither the wrapper spice nor the thick filler notes take over - it's the most representative balance of the line. There's clear full-bodied strength, but it's poised rather than aggressive. My draw was easy, the burn opened straight, and the smoke came in a steady, even volume. A textbook robusto start.

The middle rounds out beautifully. Espresso and cocoa stay central, leather fills in beneath, and a light dried-fruit sweetness lifts off the wrapper, the pepper holding at a warm, steady level. The classic 50 ring burns at a comfortable temperature, so the notes read clean and stay balanced - none of the heat of the slim No. 4, none of the sprawl of the gordos. Over about sixty minutes it develops in tidy, well-behaved steps. The grey ash sat firm and pale, the burn stayed honest. This is why the Robusto is the size I reach for by default.

The final third deepens the espresso and cedar toward the nub, the cocoa turning richer and the pepper firming gently, over a well-paced hour. My verdict: the Serie V Robusto is the balanced core of the line - the everyday, reference-point way to smoke Oliva's flagship. It doesn't specialise the way the figurados or the gordos do; it simply gives the blend at its most complete and even. The honest note is that it's still genuinely full-bodied, so not one for a mild palate. But as the definitive, no-fuss Serie V, it's exactly the one I'd recommend first.
