A Cigar of the Year that's still a value
The Aging Room Quattro Nicaragua Maestro is an all-Nicaraguan box-pressed blend - Nicaraguan Habano wrapper over Nicaraguan binder and filler - created by Rafael Nodal's Boutique Blends / Aging Room and made by A.J. Fernandez in Nicaragua. It reads medium-full: cocoa, espresso, black pepper, cedar and a caramel sweetness, rich and layered. It was named Cigar Aficionado's #1 Cigar of the Year 2019, rated 96. I care most about construction and balance, and this delivers both in spades.
What makes it special is depth with polish. The box press gives a smooth, honest draw, the burn is clean and even, and the flavors layer - chocolate and coffee anchored, pepper for edge, caramel to round it - without ever tipping into punishing strength. It's a boutique blend that smokes like one, complex and considered.
Worth clearing up the pedigree, since it gets muddled: it's the Quattro Nicaragua Maestro that won the top spot in 2019. That's distinct from the earlier Quattro Original F55 Maduro, which was Cigar Aficionado's #2 Cigar of the Year back in 2013 - same house, different blend. The only real reservation is size: at 5.7 x 57 the Maestro is a big ring gauge, which some find large for the flavor pacing they prefer. For another Nicaraguan puro and past Cigar of the Year with a similar cocoa-and-spice profile, the Oliva Serie V Melanio Robusto is the natural cross-shop; for a fuller, chocolatier box-pressed alternative, the My Father Le Bijou 1922 Toro fits. But the Quattro's balance at its price is hard to match.
Where it fits is the rich-evening slot for a smoker who wants award-level complexity without a premium-tier price - an experienced palate that appreciates a layered, well-built cigar. At sub-$14 for a former Cigar of the Year, it's an easy recommendation. As a rich, balanced, impeccably constructed Nicaraguan, the Maestro more than justifies its accolade.
