How to Store Cigars Without a Humidor

You can store cigars without a humidor by using an airtight container or zip-top bag with a two-way humidity pack. This keeps a few cigars fresh for weeks or even months at the right humidity. It is a genuinely effective low-cost solution, not just a stopgap, as long as the container seals well and you use a humidity pack rather than nothing.

The Tupperware method (a "Tupperdor")

The most popular no-humidor method uses an airtight food container:

1. Take a clean, airtight plastic container with a tight-sealing lid.
2. Place a two-way humidity pack (65 or 69 percent) inside.
3. Add your cigars, keeping the pack from directly pressing on wrappers for long periods.
4. Optionally add a small hygrometer to monitor the level.
5. Seal it and store it somewhere cool and dark.

This is called a "Tupperdor" and works remarkably well. The airtight seal holds humidity better than many cheap wooden boxes.

The zip-top bag method

For just a few cigars over a short period, a sturdy zip-top freezer bag with a humidity pack works fine. Squeeze out excess air, seal it, and keep it cool and dark. It is ideal for travel or a small stash you will smoke within a few weeks.

Why a humidity pack is essential

An airtight container alone will slowly let cigars dry to the ambient level, or trap whatever humidity was inside when you sealed it. A two-way humidity pack is what actually holds the right level, adding moisture when dry and absorbing it when damp. Without it, you are just delaying the drying, not preventing it.

What to avoid

• The refrigerator: it is dry and full of odors that cigars absorb. Avoid it.
• The freezer for storage: freezing is only for treating beetle infestations, not everyday storage.
• A plain drawer or shelf: cigars dry out within days in open air.
• A damp bathroom: too humid and unstable, inviting mold.

How long will cigars last this way?

With a good seal and a humidity pack, cigars can stay fresh for many weeks to a few months, plenty for most casual smokers. For long-term aging of a growing collection, a proper humidor or a larger sealed cooler (a "coolerdor") is the better investment.
