The sun-grown robusto sweet spot of the 1964
The Padron 1964 Anniversary Exclusivo Natural is a medium-full robusto - 5.5 by 50 - in a sun-grown natural Nicaraguan wrapper over aged Nicaraguan filler, the size many call the sweet spot of Padron's celebrated 1964 Anniversary line. It smokes cocoa, coffee, espresso, oak, leather, dry wood and black pepper, and the natural wrapper gives it a drier, spicier, more savory character than the sweeter maduro version. This is the classic 1964 in its most balanced proportion.
What makes the robusto the sweet spot is proportion. At 5.5 by 50 it has enough girth to smoke cool and enough length to develop over an hour, without the short Principe's quick finish or the churchill Diplomático's long commitment. The natural wrapper's contribution is the drier, more peppery, savory profile - cedar and oak forward against the cocoa, a clarity some smokers prefer to maduro sweetness. The box press sits perfectly in the hand, and construction is flawless: clean draw, straight burn, tight ash.
My reservations are about preference, not quality. If you like sweetness, the maduro Exclusivo brings chocolate and dried fruit where this natural stays dry and spicy - it comes down to savory versus sweet. And at roughly $13-22 a stick it's premium money, though it's the everyday-accessible tier of the aged Padron lines rather than a Family Reserve splurge. If you want the profile shorter, the Principe; longer, the Diplomático or Imperial. For the classic 1964 in a perfectly balanced natural robusto, though, this is the pick.
Where it fits is the after-dinner hour for an experienced smoker who wants the celebrated 1964 in its most versatile size and prefers a drier, spicier profile over maduro sweetness. It's refined enough for contemplation but practical enough for regular smoking. As the sweet-spot natural robusto of the 1964, it's one of the most rewarding cigars in the whole Padron range.
