The flagship blend at its biggest, coolest and smoothest
The My Father No. 5 Toro is a full-bodied 6 by 56 toro gordo - Ecuadorian Habano Rosado wrapper over Nicaraguan binder and filler, with the family's signature pigtail cap. It's the biggest size in the original 2008 flagship numbered line, the same blend as the No. 1 through Cedros but in the fattest ring. It smokes cocoa, black pepper, cedar and leather, delivering the flagship character at its smoothest and most filler-forward over about eighty minutes.
What the fat 56 ring changes is smoothness and temperature. More filler against proportionally less wrapper softens the pepper and broadens the cocoa-leather core, while the big ring keeps the smoke cool and easy from light to nub. Where the slim No. 3 Crema and Cedros Eminentes lead with cedar and sharpness, the No. 5 leads with a broad, rounded cocoa depth - just as full, but smoother and more generous. It's the most easygoing of the numbered sizes without being any less rich. Construction is classic My Father: oily wrapper, an open generous draw, straight burn, a thick tight ash.
My reservations are about size and pace. It's still a genuinely full cigar - the smoothness doesn't make it mild - and the 56 ring is a big mouthful that's not for every palate or every occasion. At eighty minutes it's the longest of the numbered sizes, so it's the wrong pick when you're short on time. If you want sharper spice or more cedar, the No. 1 or the slim Crema; if you want the shortest smoke, the No. 1. For the flagship blend at its coolest, smoothest and most generous, though, this is the one.
Where it fits is the relaxed long smoke for an experienced smoker who wants the flagship's depth without any edge - a cool, broad, cocoa-rich toro to settle into for an evening. It pairs beautifully with coffee or a dark spirit. As the biggest size of the original line, it's the flagship at its most easygoing.
