The biggest-ring, coolest, roundest size of the line
The My Father La Antiguedad Toro Gordo is a full-bodied 6 by 60 - a Nicaraguan puro with an Ecuadorian Habano Rosado wrapper over Nicaraguan binder and filler. It's the fattest-ring size of the line, the widest gauge among these bold, dark cigars, and it delivers La Antiguedad's power in its coolest, roundest, most easygoing form. It smokes leather, dark bittersweet cocoa, cedar, espresso and mellowed black pepper over about ninety minutes - the smoothest way to enjoy one of the family's boldest blends.
What the massive 60 ring does is cool and round the power to the maximum. With more tobacco in play than any other size against proportionally little wrapper, the ember burns coolest and the leather-and-cocoa profile spreads broad and smooth, the Nicaraguan pepper mellowed to a low rumble rather than the slim sizes' sharp spice. It's the roundest, most easygoing size of the line, bold power delivered smooth over ninety minutes, the Habano Rosado sweetness rounding the rich dark volume. Construction is classic My Father: a dark oily wrapper, an open generous draw, straight burn, a thick heavy ash.
My reservations are about ring size and strength. It's still a genuinely full-bodied cigar - one of My Father's boldest - so it's not for a mild palate, a beginner, or an empty stomach even at this coolest-burning size. And the 60 ring is a big mouthful that not everyone enjoys in the hand; if you prefer a more traditional feel the Robusto suits, and for sharp, wrapper-forward spice the slim Corona Grande. If you want length as well as girth, the Super Toro. For a smooth, cool, round take on La Antiguedad's dark power, though, the Toro Gordo is the mellowest and most easygoing of the line.
Where it fits is the relaxed evening smoke for an experienced smoker who loves a big ring and wants bold power delivered smooth - a long after-dinner sit to nurse slowly, a weekend cigar, or the roundest, coolest way into the blend. It pairs beautifully with a dark spirit or strong coffee. As the widest size of a bold, dark blend, the Toro Gordo is its smoothest, most easygoing expression.
