The balanced heart of the El Centurion line
The My Father El Centurion Robusto is a medium-full 5.75 by 50 - a Nicaraguan puro with a Sun Grown Criollo 98 wrapper over Criollo, Corojo Habano and Sancti Spiritus fillers, in a soft box-press. It's the core size of a blend that began as a 2007 limited edition and returned as regular production by popular demand, and it delivers El Centurion's signature cedar-and-cocoa character in its most balanced, everyday form. It smokes cedar, bittersweet cocoa, black pepper, leather and a touch of espresso over about sixty-five minutes.
What the robusto format does is balance. At 5.75 inches it runs slightly longer than a standard robusto, which gives the cedar-forward blend just enough runway to layer cocoa, leather and espresso against the Nicaraguan pepper without ever sprawling. The Criollo 98 wrapper adds a sweet edge that rounds the spice, and the whole thing stays medium-full and complex but smooth - the size that balances the line's complexity against smoke time best. Construction is classic My Father: a rich reddish wrapper, an excellent box-press draw, straight burn, a firm ash.
My reservations are honest. It's a genuinely medium-full cigar with real black pepper, so a mild-palate smoker or a beginner should start gentler - the My Father Connecticut suits better there. The soft box-press won't suit everyone's grip either, though it draws beautifully. And if you want more time to let the blend stretch out, the Toro or Toro Grande give you that. For a complex, cedar-and-cocoa daily smoke in a well-proportioned size, though, the Robusto is the one to reach for.
Where it fits is the everyday premium smoke for an experienced smoker who wants complexity without a huge time commitment - an after-work cigar, a focused hour, or the ideal entry to the El Centurion line. It pairs beautifully with coffee or a dark spirit. As the core size of a blend that earned its comeback, the Robusto is the balanced heart of the range.
