History
Cohiba is the flagship brand of Cuban cigars, created in 1966. It began as a private cigar made for Fidel Castro and Cuban officials before being released commercially in 1982. Every Cohiba is a Cuban puro, rolled from selected tobacco and, for the premium lines, an extra fermentation step that sets the brand apart.
The name comes from the Taíno word the indigenous people of the Caribbean used for the rolled tobacco leaves Columbus encountered. Today Cohiba sits at the top of the Habanos portfolio, with the Behike line representing its most exclusive release.

Frequently asked questions
Is Cohiba a Cuban cigar?
Yes. Cohiba is the flagship Cuban brand, made in Havana by Habanos S.A. There is also a separate Dominican Cohiba sold in the United States by General Cigar, which is a different product.
Why is Cohiba so expensive?
Cohiba uses selected tobacco and, on its premium lines, an additional fermentation step. Its prestige, limited supply, and status as Cuba's flagship brand also drive prices up.
What is the most exclusive Cohiba line?
The Behike line is Cohiba's most exclusive release, known for using rare medio tiempo leaves in the blend.
